Art Journaling Prompt: Quotes

This week I’ve got a quick one for you. I’m a big fan of quotes and I love to incorporate them into my art. Other times, I just need a good reminder.

This quote, from Theodore Roosevelt, was in my mind a lot this week. I think we’ve all experienced that lovely feeling of comparison—and it’s seemingly more often than ever. Is it social media? I guess that must be part of it, because I know that sometimes, a few minutes on Facebook can make me feel as though everyone else in the world is effortlessly fabulous, whereas I seem to be limping behind, sweaty-faced and woefully inadequate.

It’s not always this way. Usually I love social media—it helps me stay connected with people I don’t see very often. And I share a lot of my work this way as well. But sometimes there’s a perfect meet-up between one’s own self-doubt and a gale force of fun and fabulousness in Everyone Else’s World that can be really unpleasant.

So I thought I might need a reminder. 🙂

Art Journaling Writing: Quotes

I wrote the quote right onto my journal page, without any prep on the page itself. I did actually make a rather layered background, but it wasn’t dry enough for me to write on, so I’m saving it.

I used my Staedtler pigment liner to wtite, then went back over the letters to give them more emphasis. I then used a Caran d’Ache black pencil to go over those lines. I wanted them scuffy but bold. The border around the edge is the same.

The quote itself I double-checked by Googling it; you can simply type in “literary quotes” and get a ton of great inspiring quotes to include in your art journal.

Side note: I actually did the lettering three times before getting it the way I wanted on this page. Once I spelled “thief” wrong, another time “comparison” didn’t fit on the page and the third time I tried to add color on top and my blending efforts became a big puddly mess. I have to think it was only the universe having a go with me.

Art Journaling Coloring

Once I had my lettering done, I scribbled Aqua Gelato stick on the page. This is a very pale blue, so it adds some color without dominating the page. The red is a Paper Crafter crayon, used solely because it was on my work table, but I like the idea of coloring in some of the open letters.

Art Journaling Pages: Simple and Not-Simple

I mentioned I first had a heavily layered background for this quote, which wasn’t dry enough for me to use here. I find that I like to alternate simple pages with more elaborate ones. Some topics are more suited to layered pages, while others are better with simple pen-paper combinations.

  1. I cannot imagine you ever being woefully inadequate! I am the one who is limping behind, but thank you for all the wonderful examples and ideas you give us, and especially for showing us that you do occasionally have difficulties/spelling errors. Makes me feel like I might actually be able to create something!

  2. LOL, thanks, Janet! You are definitely not limping behind—you’ve always got great designs and projects going! That said, I think we all go through bouts of self-doubt…if we didn’t we wouldn’t be normal!
