Hi friends! Today I’m just back in my messy little nook, having returned from the Creative World show in Frankfurt yesterday! My new WOW Embossing Powder Trio, Twinkly Fizz, launched at the show and I’m excited to show you how to use these powders on a card!
The background is layers of Fresco paints, plus Strawberry Sparkle embossing powder. Layered on top is Grunge Paste and some watery paint. The focal is a stamp from the PaperArtsy ESN65 stamp set, stamped with VersaFine Clair ink and then spot-stamped with Globe Thistle paint, and Grape Fizz embossing powder. Yes, it’s a lot so let’s look at the step-by-steps!
First, brayer-paint a piece of smooth white cardstock with Vintage Lace. I’m using PaperArtsy’s Smoothy card. Don’t cover all the white!
Then, fill in some of the areas with Pixie Dust paint.
You’ll sprinkle on Strawberry Sparkle embossing powder, which will stick to some areas of the paint, creating one piece with layers of white, Vintage Lace, Pixie Dust and finally, sparkly Strawberry Sparkle. You don’t need to work super-quickly here, but fast enough so some of the embossing powder sticks to the wet paint.
After you heat-set it, you can then add more texture if you like! I’m using Grunge Paste, straight from the jar, through the PS370 stencil from PaperArtsy.
I apply it with my finger—but you can be tidier and use a palette knife. 🙂
Remove the stencil and let the Grunge Paste dry. It doesn’t take long. I then used a giant sanding block to sand down the Grunge Paste, which gives a distressed look and makes the stenciled area really soft, almost like felt.
Then, stamp your image with VersaFine Clair in Pinecone, onto a piece of cardstock that’s painted with Vintage Lace. Versafine Clair is such a gorgeous ink pad, it’s pigment, so it works perfectly as an embossing ink… and the color is rich and captures detail perfectly.
Clean off your stamp, let the stamped image dry, then “ink up” just the heart portion of the design with Globe Thistle. I’m using a foam stylus tip that I found in my stash… but any spongy sort of applicator will work.
Then stamp onto the original image, and immediately cover with Grape Fizz embossing powder.
In this case, you want the powder to really only cover the area around the heart, leaving the script just with Pinecone. Then, set that piece aside. We’ll move back to our background. I’m first splattering with Bougainvillea paint, right on top of the stencilng.
Then make a watery mix of Bougainvillea and Haze, and splatter that on top as well.
It will dry on the painted area, the Grunge Paste’d area and the embossing powder!
Add some of that watery wash inside the heart, wait a few minutes and use a baby wipe to wipe off the paint from the embossed numbers.
This will add a shadow effect.
Before you trim and glue, here’s what the various elements will look like. First, the stenciled background, which I edged with Globe Thistle before gluing it to my card front—
And the focal element. I used tiny bits of black washi tape to hold the embroidery thread in place.
Then I added the stamped word on top, mounting it with foam tape. The word “Dreamer” is from a sentiment on the ESN65 stamp set, which I masked off before stamping.
Here are a few more looks—
I hope you enjoyed this fun and easy way to combine paint and embossing powder for texture, dimension and sparkle!
