Washi tape and two-part resin epoxy come together so easily to make customized jewellery or craft embellishments. Have a look at this simple and striking pendant—
This is made with the Curators Essential 4″ Washi Tape Roll – Wings from 49 And Market, simply adhered to white cardstock, trimmed to fit inside a metal bezel, and topped with resin. The black-and-white color combo is so classic, and works really nicely as a simple necklace.
And it’s easy to make!
First, apply the washi tape to a piece of lightweight white cardstock. Nothing too thick.
Then, cut out the area you want to fit inside your bezel.
You can use scissors or a paper trimmer for straight lines. If your bezel is round or square, you can often find small cutting dies or paper punches that make the cutting much easier!
Then, coat the washi tape piece with a sealer. You can buy specialty sealers, but a white craft glue or Mod Podge works beautifully. Place it on your craft mat, then use a brush to apply a thin layer to the back and front of the washi tape piece. Do one side, then let it dry and flip it over to do the other side. Also make sure to get some sealer along the edges. While the washi tape acts as a sealer of sorts for the front of the cardstock, the back can absorb the resin and cause discoloration to the piece.
When it’s dry, use a bit of glue stick to glue the washi tape piece inside the bezel.
Then, place the bezel flat on your craft mat. Measure, mix and pour the resin to the manufacturer’s instructions and then pour into the bezel. Let the piece dry—usually 24 hours—and you can create jewellery or make an embellishment with your piece! Note: I’m using ArtResin, which is an easy-to-use two-part epoxy.
To make this necklace, I added a silver jump ring to the loop on the top of the bezel, then strung it onto a cord that comes with the clasp at the ends. Simple!
The bezel measures about 1″x 1.5″ so there are plenty of possibilities for wearing or showcasing it. You could string it onto another type of chain or cord, or use the jump ring to clip it to large-loop chain; you could also add in a pop of color with a wire-wrapped bead dangling from the same jump ring. Or skip wearing it and turn it into a key ring, bag charm or add it to an art journal or other mixed-media project!
