Saturday was my day to sit at the Zomergasten exhibit at the Galerie de Pieter in Leiden—all the exhibiting artists are required to do this in pairs, and it’s a great opportunity to meet other artists, talk to people who come to see the exhibit and, in my case, practice my conversational Dutch. (I was dead tired at the end of the day, from having concentrated so hard!)
The gallery is in a former post office, so it’s pretty huge by gallery standards, and it has all these little nooks and tiny rooms. I was out of town for the show’s opening, so this was my chance to look at all the work on display. And I was lucky enough to sit with two artists whose work I really love: Cea Maat and Franceline Pompe. (Both of them kindly spoke sloooowly for me and made an effort to understand my Dutch pronunciation!)
The other work I really loved was by artist Mariken Oltheten, who does such rich and dimensional pieces, I felt like I could fall into them.
A few more photos from the exhibition…
The exhibition is on until July 31, so if you’re in the area, stop by! If not, check out the artists’ websites for inspiration.
