All Saints’ Day, Oliwa Cemetery in Gdansk, Poland.
This is an absolutely stunning experience: A dusk-lit walk through Oliwa Park, the crowd of people heading through the winding park to the cemetery, footsteps sounding on the brick walkway, glass lanterns clicking in in bags, the murmur of Polish. People of all ages, from the very young to the very old, babies and teenagers and grandparents. The lights and colors and warmth from the candles and lanterns decorating the graves; the sound of chanting, prayers and Mass.
It makes me think: This is what religion is for—bringing people together, providing comfort and some connection with the past. A little mystery, a little unknown, a little ceremony. A lot of lights in the darkness.
The lights look beautiful!!
