Photo Friday: Vases by the Church

This month I’m enjoying Susannah Conway’s Photo Meditations course. I love online classes and have taken several from Susannah.

One point I picked up on this week was about “exercising your eye”—which for photography, really means getting out and taking a ton of photos. So this week I popped out for a few errands with the idea to photograph things according to the composition guidelines we’d been discussing in class.

One classic composition guideline is the Rule of Uneven Numbers. (If you took any of my scrapbooking classes in the past, you know I can really go on about this.) It was one of the many we talked about this week, so I thought I’d explore my neighborhood with that in mind.

Basically, the Rule of Uneven Numbers suggests that an uneven number of items in a photo is more visually pleasing than an even number: Three is more appealing than four, five rather than six.

The photo below was outside the church by our house. There’s a billboard-size photo of the Pope on the outside, and always a cluster of flower bouquets beneath. Five of them, today. (Uneven numbers, lucky me!) And I love that while we have the uniformity of the number, the vases are all different and the one on the left seems to be spaced out more. It’s lovely in its imperfection, don’t you think?

Happy Friday!

PS. The Photo Meditations class is closed now, but I see it’s also offered in the autumn. I highly recommend Susannah’s classes, so if you’re looking for something to inspire and guide you, do check out her website.

  1. Sara, I always enjoy your blogs and learn from your videos. I’m a poor commenter but want to thank you for all your work and sharing.
