I took this photo a few years ago, when we first moved to Amsterdam. The bird is one of these gigantic herons that live in the Vondelpark (actually, you can find them in other places around town–especially around the fish stalls at the Albert Cuypmarkt in the Pijp). They’re eerily beautiful and they move so slowly it’s like seeing something prehistoric. I find them kind of hypnotizing, actually; it’s like they’ve come from another time.
Anyway, what I love about this photo is how the water in the lake creates a spotlight on the bird, and how our heron isn’t exactly in the center of the picture. And that most of it is in silhouette really makes it different from a lot of the other photos I take.
