Today on Resin Jewellery Tuesday: A Resin Button Hairclip!
New to Resin Jewellery Tuesday? Each week we to explore a new project using ICE Resin® from Ranger. These projects are based on the resin techniques covered in my latest book from Search Press, How to Make Resin Jewellery.
What crafter doesn’t have a jar of spare buttons? I have several—and I love shopping for vintage buttons at flea markets. Buttons are a fabulous accent for hair clips, whether you simply glue them to a barrette base or incorporate them with resin as I’ve done here. The clip I’m using is called an Alligator Hair Clip, so it slides into your hair and sort of clamps it down. Of course, this style works well for just about any clip base.
Resin Button Hairclip, what you need—
- ICE Resin® two-part epoxy (includes cup and stir stick)
- Disposable gloves
- Baby wipes
- Mod Podge or other clear sealer
- Book paper
- Silver hair clip—8cm long
- Silver watch case—3cm diameter (or any flat bezel without a loop)
- 4 medium buttons—approximately 1.5cm
- 6 small buttons—approximately 1cm
- Toothpick
- 1” circle punch
Resin Button Hairclip, how to make it—
1. Punch a circle of book paper. Coat it with sealer, then let it dry and glue it inside the watch case.
2. Place the watch case on a flat surface. Use a toothpick to apply sealer/glue to the 6 small buttons, arranging them in a circular format inside the watch case bezel. Glue one medium button in the center. Let the glue dry.
3. Mix the resin, then use a toothpick to fill the watch case and coat the buttons. Take care not to overflow the shallow watch case. Let cure.
4. Use glue to adhere the cured watch case bezel to the hair clip. Glue two medium buttons on one side and a third medium button on the other side. Like so—
