Welcome to Washi Tape Tuesday! Love washi tape? (Or maybe you have a stash that you want to put to use?) Then join me for tips, techniques and ideas for adding washi tape to your handmade cards!
Washi tape is great for creating colorful backgrounds—one of my favorite ways to use it is to create a faux-weave. It’s simple!
On the card above, you can see the red solid washi tape and the dot washi tape. These were placed side-by-side on a piece of white cardstock, allowing a bit of white to show between the strips. Then I turned the paper and cut strips with my paper trimmer, so I had strips of cardstock with stripes. It’s a bit hard to explain without pictures, so take a look—bear in mind, I’m using different washi tape for the photos below.
Place strips of washi tape on your white cardstock, leaving space in between.
Use your paper trimmer to cut strips of the paper, creating strips with stripes.
Like this! Here’s how to make the rest of the card:
What you’ll need—
– Washi tape: Narrow red solid, red dot
– Stamps: Just a Little Greeting (Hot Off The Press)
– Black inkpad
– Small flowers, red brads
– Hemp twine
– White, black cardstock
How to make it—
1. Glue the washi tape strips to a piece of white cardstock, alternating each strip with a narrow strip of black cardstock. Trim the piece, then mat on black cardstock, leaving a wider border at the bottom.
2. Tie a knot in a piece of hemp twine and wrap around the piece. Glue to white cardstock and stamp the sentiment below. Glue tot the front of a black blank card. Add three flowers as shown.
Simple! (But it looks complicated, doesn’t it?)

Great idea. I’ve seen products in my craft store that say ‘craft tape’ or ‘fabric tape’. Are these products the same as Washi tape?
Hi Barbara, you can use the items you’ve seen at your local shop for this technique but they are not the same as washi tape. Washi tape is a patterned, transparent masking tape. Although “craft tape” would be something similar, I’ve found that they usually are made in China (rather than Japan, where washi tape is from) and in my experience they are not as good in terms of quality. I’ve sometimes found that my craft tape is hard to unroll after having it for a year or so, whereas my Japanese washi tape is always easy to peel off and use. I usually use tape from MT or Kamoi, both of which I’ve been able to find at craft stores and online. But it really just depends on what you have available and what appeals to you! Good luck and have fun!
